Football, Because Football

9780700621392On Jan. 15, 1967, the first Super Bowl was played as the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League defeated the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League, 35-10.  We confess we’re a little partial to the Chiefs, as well as one of our award-winning books on college football, “The Rise of Gridiron Univeristy: Higer Education’s Uneasy Alliance with Big-Time Football” by Brian M. Ingrassia.  Ingrassia offers the most complete account to date of the origins of college football and its role in shaping the modern university. His book traces the sport’s evolution from a gentleman’s pastime to a multi-million dollar enterprise that made athletics a permanent fixture on our nation’s campuses and cemented college football’s place in American culture.  Here’s to football fans cheering on their favorite teams throughout the weekend.  (PS: Go Kansas City Chiefs!)
